St. Jude Patient of the Month: Khaz

Jersey

Khaz's Story

Khaz was a year old and starting to take steps in 2023 when he began to lose balance. Soon, he stopped walking altogether. Even when the toddler crawled, he leaned over, said his mom Akemi. Khaz then began to vomit. His parents took him to the hospital, where tests later revealed a brain mass. He was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a brain tumor of the cerebellum.

“I was numb,” Akemi said. Khas underwent surgery to remove the tumor at the local hospital in Mississippi. He then was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. “We wanted him to have the best treatment, and I just kept praying about it,” Akemi said.

At St. Jude, Khaz received chemotherapy and returned home in January 2024. “He is having to learn to walk and talk again, and he is making progress every single day,” Akemi said. She said she had seen the St. Jude television ads, but once she arrived at the hospital, she learned more about St. Jude and its work to help children with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses.

“I feel St. Jude is a place of miracles,” she said. “All the nurses know my baby. The therapists know my baby. I feel

St. Jude took care of our family, and we only had to worry about Khaz.”

Khaz likes to count and enjoys hearing his parents sing to him. He also loves the outdoors and playing with his dog.

“St. Jude will always have a very special place in our hearts,” said James’ mom. “My great-grandfather had no idea what impact his work in the 1960’s would have in the 2020’s. It's people like him that make St. Jude what it is today.
